How to Select a Used Moving Box

When picking up used boxes, you must always check that each box is clean, dry and sturdy enough to hold your items. Essentially, the boxes you select are crucial in minimizing potential damage.

      1. Select boxes that are suitable for your items.
      2. As the size of the box increases, the weight of packed items should decrease.
      3. Make sure the boxes are not packed too heavily, as boxes may break open.
      4. Also ensure that packed boxes are not too light, as they can be easily crushed.

You will find that it can be challenging to find a sturdy used moving box in the right size to protect your possessions. We offer new cartons (boxes) and specialty boxes for very specific moving needs, such as golf club cartons, bicycle cartons, grandfather clock boxes and crates.

Standard Moving Box Sizes and Recommended Uses

Whether you are using used boxes or purchasing moving boxes from us, it’s always a good idea to know the ideal box sizes for packing before your move.

1.5 cubic foot box (Book or Small Carton)

This is the smallest general-purpose box, used for items such as books, CDs, DVDs, tools and canned goods.

3.0 cubic foot box (Medium Carton)

Known as the workhorse of boxes, this box is just right for smaller, heavier items. Small kitchen appliances, lamp bases, pots and pans and small outdoor tools are suitable for packing in this size carton.

      4.5 cubic foot box

This box is used for non-hanging clothes, linens, larger lamp bases, lamp shades, unbreakable kitchen goods and toys.

6.0 cubic foot box (Large Carton)

The largest general-purpose box, this box is used for lightweight, bulky items, including stuffed toys, pillows and winter coats.

      Dishpack (Barrel or Dish Barrel)

Multi-layer construction makes this the safest and strongest of all boxes. Dishpacks are recommended for all breakable kitchenware, china and crystal.

      Mattress Carton

All mattresses must be transported in boxes. King size box springs will require either twin or king boxes.

      Mirror Carton

Mirror cartons are expandable boxes used for mirrors, pictures and small glass table tops.

      Wardrobe Cartons

This box is constructed so that hanging clothes and draperies will remain hanging during the move.

The following items require extra care when packing.

      • China and glassware
      • Lamps
      • Silverware, silverplate and sterling silver
      • Glass table tops, marble slabs, mirrors and art

      Crates

The ultimate specialty carton is a crate, which serves to protect extremely fragile pieces such as marble and glass. These cartons are built to order, and must be ordered in advance of your move. Your representative may recommend specialty crates, and take precise measurements to ensure that custom crates are properly constructed specifically for your items.
